About Chinton

The "Chinton" crafted by Sangen-shi Kikuoka is a small shamisen born to make traditional Japanese music a natural part of everyday life.

At about two-thirds the size of a full-sized shamisen, it has a charming, inviting appearance that makes you want to pick it up and play.

Yet its quality is thoroughly authentic — each instrument is carefully crafted one by one by a certified traditional craftsman.

The playing technique is the same as a regular shamisen, making it the perfect first step for anyone who has ever dreamed of playing one someday.

Easy-to-Care-For Sound Membrane

The Chinton's sound membrane is made from a material called Yupo Paper.

Yupo Paper is an extremely durable synthetic paper also used for election ballots and election posters.

Traditional Japanese instruments have a reputation for being difficult or demanding to care for.

In fact, conventional shamisen use natural animal skin for their sound membrane, which can tear if not stored carefully in the right environment and conditions — rendering the instrument unplayable.

The Yupo Paper used in the Mini Chinton, however, is strong, tear-resistant, and water-repellent, making it easy to enjoy playing in your daily life without worry.

Design

Another distinctive feature is its design flexibility.

Any design can be printed on the sound membrane, making it possible to create a wide range of collaboration products or a completely one-of-a-kind original Chinton.

Thanks to its rare combination of striking design and compact size, the Chinton can be enjoyed as home decor — displayed in your room like a piece of art — even when you're not playing it.

Why not choose your favorite design and put it on display?
